IDS can sit between the Firewall and the Router and monitor who is trying to attack & hack into the corporate network.

What is Intrusion Detection?
Intrusion Detection running on a system with 2 network cards in stealth mode.They do not have an IP address - they cannot be seen from the Internet IDS does watch all traffic passing by it if some activity occurs which is against its rule set it can alert the Sysadmin, reset the IP session, reconfigure the Firewall to block a port or specific traffic, or Traffic from a particular site (IP address).
